On his solo debut, the Tame Impala ally basks in glitter rock’s wounded magnificence. Like the unholy offspring of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, and Nick Cave, Allbrook transforms the piano balladry of “Blow Up Saxophone” and “Career (A Letter To Kim)” into displays of weird, writhing wonder. The cacophony of “A Fool There Was” slowly coalesces and then climaxes into a battle hymn for cabaret dwellers. Even in its fractured grandeur, the album is strikingly lovely and disarmingly sensitive. Engulfed in the heedless passions of “Advance,” it’s hard to tell whether Allbrook is breaking down or breaking free.
