10 Songs, 37 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

On his stunning debut, Tyler Childers embraces the same cosmic country sound of coproducer Sturgill Simpson, mixing dusky twang and badass attitude. The songs of the Kentucky singer/songwriter are filled with seriously flawed characters. On “Banded Clovis” the jailed narrator recalls killing a friend while under the influence of “pills and the powder” over an Indian arrowhead they’d found together. On the bluegrass-steeped title track he pleads with his lover for help, certain she’s the only thing standing between him and hell.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

We are in a music revival right now, and Tyler Childers is leading the pack. With his haunting howl and his raspy voice; he is relevant and is leading an Appalachian music movement right now. This is, hands down, going to be the best album you will pick up. Lady May will always be my favorite; as he had me at, “I’m baptized in your name, lovely Lady May”. But, the newest version of “Universal Sound” has a strong second place with me. The way the sounds bounce from ear to ear when you listen with earbuds in, gives me a crazy music high. You will feel a nostalgia for someplace you have never been, but are sure that you want to go.

This is what genuine art sounds like. East Kentucky and West Virginia inspired song writing at its finest. Take notes music row, this is what music is meant to be

This is going to be a good one folks.

Tyler is a talented songwriter and his vocals can chill the bone. If the first two tracks available are any indication, this album will be his breakthrough, and it's hard to go wrong with Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson at the helm of producing.
