Album Review

Whatever progressions the Chris Duarte Group make on their 2010 release Infinite Energy are a matter of depth, not breadth. The group doesn’t try anything new — Duarte still specializes in a distinctly Texas brand of the blues, one that has Stevie Ray Vaughan as ground zero, where even the Hendrix-isms are filtered through SRV — but they do manage to lock into a soulful groove on “My Heart Don’t Want to Let You Go” and creates a noir-streaked moodiness on the instrumental “Hamra St” quite unlike anything he’s done before. Elsewhere, the sound remains the same and if the production is way too clean for Duarte’s increasingly rough, wobbly vocals, his guitar sounds hot and full, speaking with a warmth he can not manage, nor needs to create, as a singer.

Raw Blues Energy with Tons of Soul

Didn't think twice about clicking the "Buy Album" button. The Chris Duarte Group always manages to get my heart pumping. Just fired it up for the first time and the new album is kickin' right from the start. I'll be cranking this one up on the drive home today guys. Lot's of guitar and lot's of soul. If you dig Chris Duarte and his emotion packed blues with tons of energy, then grab this one up NOW! Thanks again Mr. Duarte and crew for another great Blues album. And if you have not yet, I suggest you catch them live . . . Awesome!

Infinite Energy

Chris Duarte is rapidly engaging in fantastic rhythm and blues guitar and lyrics. If y'all are looking for a "pop" variety hit, you won't find that in a serious musician. This man is fantastic.

OK. Stop the SRV crap. Seriously.

As I look above and see the trite bull that is somehow trying to define an artist, I want to vomit onto my keyboard. Duarte is nothing like SRV. Never was. He might cross into that narrow area Stevie was in... but it isn't anything like the stereotypical SRV "cheery" blues. So... please... stop trying to compare artists. It's never wise because it shows that you only know what's on the surface and can't, in any way, see what lies beneath.

I love Chris Duarte. Saw him play in Appleton, WI once. Amazing. This release, however, is a little lacking. Don't scour this looking for anything close to "Something Wicked". It is, on the other hand, more from a great guitarist and more is always a good thing when it comes out like Duarte can deliver.

Genre: Blues

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Austin-based guitarist, songwriter, and singer Chris Duarte has often been compared with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's heady stuff for the musician, who plays a rhythmic style of Texas blues-rock that is at times reminiscent of Vaughan's sound, and at other times reminiscent of Johnny Winter. The truth is, Duarte has his own sound that draws on elements of jazz, blues, and rock & roll. Although he is humbled by the comparisons with the late Vaughan, the San Antonio-raised musician began playing...
