Album Review

The final studio album for the Beat Farmers saw a change in the lineup. Second guitarist/vocalist Buddy Blue was replaced by Joey Harris, who had sung on the group's two previous albums. Harris proves to be a more than competent singer and guitarist, and also shares lead vocals with Jerry Raney on some songs. "Ridin'" is one of the finer songs on the record, fitting in easily with the band's country-rock, bar-room style. An excellent Paul Kamanski original titled "Hollywood Hills" opens the album, and it's one of the finest tracks the group ever recorded. Raney comes up with a few good originals such as "King of the World," but the cracks in the foundation are evident. It's an excellent album in the end, but there is evidence of some alienation (in terms of band identity) in the grooves.

Best BFer album song for song

The BFers third album showed that they were ready for the next step. Although their record label (even today) could never figure out how to market this band, Pursuit is a great album. That does not take away from Tales or Van Go- also great albums. Pursuit showed off all of the band's skills including Country Dick's great fun songs as well as Jerry Raney's classic guitar sound. Joey Harris added another great guitar. It was pure magic. Download this out of print album now. Hey, the band will probably never see a dime thanks to Curb but the music lives on. Hey, Curb- re-release this album with the Home of Country Dick as a bonus feature. Better yet, talk to Jamie Dawson and release the BFer documentary.....don't be so cheap!

The Beat Farmers enjoyed a cult following throughout the 1980s and early '90s until the untimely passing of lead singer/drummer/guitarist Country Dick Montana in November 1995. He was just 40, and he collapsed after a massive heart attack at the Long Horn, a bar in Whistler, British Columbia, in western Canada. Montana, a former record store owner, and past president of the Kinks Preservation Society fan club, formed the Beat Farmers in San Diego in 1983, influenced on the one hand by country and...
