Album Review

After Ira Sullivan decided to return to Miami after six years spent co-leading an advanced quintet with trumpeter Red Rodney, Dick Oatts (best known for his work with Flim and the BB's) took his place. Oatts (heard on this CD on soprano, alto and tenor) matched well with Rodney and the young rhythm section of pianist Garry Dial, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Joey Baron. The music remained quite modern, particularly compared to what most of Rodney's contemporaries were playing in the mid-'80s, and the almost 80-year-old Rodney was still in prime form. The repertoire on this adventurous but often swinging CD consists of five Dial originals, one by Oatts, a ballad written for the leader ("Red Giant"), "Young and Foolish," and a nearly eleven-minute rendition of "Greensleeves."
