A Complete Feast of Latin Music to be Enjoyed Repeatedly

This is my all-time favorite latin music album. I've listened to it every weekend for the last 5 years, and it still tickles my ears and musical sensibilities.

Sample the Descarga tracks, and you will see that this is the original form of latin jazz. Descarga is a jam session of sorts, a warm-up for the musicians before a set, or sometimes a riff between songs that extemporaneously transforms into a song-like delicacy. They expound and explore grooves with ease, as old friends in a living room. And we're all blessed that Gonzalez has lots of friends.

The virtuoso Gonzalez is accompanied by 21 generous master ensemble players and singers. With that many people, it would be easy to fill every inch of the acoustic space with sound but fortunately they never play all at the same time; different combinations of percussion, strings, vocals, brass, winds are activated throughout the song, creating multiple textures within the larger fabric of the piece. The instruments are so finely balanced that we can savor the subtlest flourishes present within the harmonies, poly-rhythms, and accompaniments.

Enjoy this feast at home, but don't feel pressured into give it all your attention, though you may find yourself wanting to. Ruben and his ensemble won't mind that you may be cooking, doing the laundry, or browsing the internet. You may just find that all of it is infused with the joy that this album will bring its listeners for many years to come.

Rubén González was one of the last of Cuba's great Afro-Cuban piano players. Although he had played and recorded with the band led by Enrique Jorrín, the creator of the cha-cha, for a quarter of a century, he had retired from music by the mid-'80s. Things began to change when González recorded with the Afro-Cuban All Stars in 1996. The album, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, released the following year, helped to inspire an international fascination for Afro-Cuban music and brought González to the attention...
