iTunes Review

In the '90s, hip-hop and R&B were evolving in tandem. Even though R. Kelly’s sophomore solo album was released just two years after 12 Play, it represented massive changes in the urban music landscape. For the most part, the album builds on the best parts of its predecessor, but any lingering trace of New Jack Swing is eradicated in favor of a plush, velvety, and laid-back sound. Kelly solidified his credibility in the East Coast street rap community with “Hump Bounce” and “(You to Be) Be Happy,” which feature Keith Murray and The Notorious B.I.G., respectively. Kelly’s stock-in-trade was the bedroom come-on, a form he continued to fine-tune with “Step in My Room,” “Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby…," and “Tempo Slow,” all of which are seductive to the point of being narcotic. To balance the album’s insidiously sensual atmospherics, Kelly delved into his gospel leanings with “Heaven If You Hear Me” and “Religious Love,” establishing a connection to the historical duality of R&B. The tradition comes alive on “Down Low (Nobody Has to Know),” an outstanding production co-starring his boyhood idol and fellow seducer Ron Isley.

Customer Reviews

R.kelly is the one of the best artists and music masterminds of our time. I have every album he ever made, and i recommend you get every album. It will be worth your money.

This album is a definite highlight among R&B. This is R. Kelly at his best, next to Happy People / U Saved Me, which is probably my favorite of his even though it's not offered on iTunes. You should check it out if you're like me and are sick of sexual lyrics and repetitive beats; it has a great positive ring to it. And I really don't care if R. Kelly is a hypocrite in making it, by going right back to being all "hardcore" and perverse in his subsequent release, I still enjoy it. But back to the point, this album is just right. There's not too much of anything, and it really shows his smoother, more respectable side. I recommend this to anyone who wants REAL R&B.

R Kellyz a musical god!!!

R&B producer/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter R. Kelly and his supporting band Public Announcement began recording in 1992 at the end of the new jack swing era, yet he was able to keep much of its sound alive while remaining commercially successful. While he created a smooth, professional mixture of hip-hop beats, soulman crooning, and funk, the most distinctive element of Kelly's music is its explicit carnality. He was able to make songs like "Sex Me," "Bump n' Grind," "Your Body's Callin',"...
