iTunes Editors’ Notes

A Baltimore rapper who started his career as a hipster favorite and Internet sensation and now finds his music featured in several videogames, movies, TV shows, and even a salad-dressing commercial, Spank Rock has come a long way in five years. Everything Is Boring. . . is only his second official full-length (after his 2006 debut, YoYoYoYoYo), though he has released a grip of singles, mixtapes, and EPs as well. Sounding like the love child of 2 Live Crew, Odd Future, Prince (especially on "Baby"), and Peaches, his music is heavy on the electro-flavored beats, with lots of handclaps, glitchy sound effects, and freaky synth work. Meanwhile, the hyper-repetitive chanted choruses and tongue-in-cheek lyrics center on everything from getting his sex on ("Nasty") to dancing ("The Dance") to comedic reflections on racism ("Race Riot"). In a refreshing change from most rap music, there are hardly any guest artists, though his homegirl Santigold appears on "Car Song."

Customer Reviews

Amazing album.

Great lyrical content. edgy with depth and life experience.

Cutting edge arrangements, out of the box with enough structure to keep it commercially interesting.

The Music is a hybrid many times between hard hitting beats (sonically treated in a futuristic way. sometimes simple.), dance and indie soundscapes.

Brilliant.

A huge step forward in growth as an artist from his first LP.

Much respect for doing it the indie route.

A solid album all the way through

Wow, I'm insanely impressed by this album. Not that I was expecting anything less from Spank Rock, but this truly blew my mind. From the production, to the lyrics, and the overall tone set by each track - this is a solid album all the way through.

Each song has a different flavor but when it comes together it flows like a great, well thought out story. I especially admire his experimental mixing of pop, electronic, and indie elements. I think this entire album has something for everyone no matter what their taste. Except for your mom, unless your mom is really cool.

Taking a look back at Spank's old work (which I love), this album definitely stands out as more unique and personal than what we've seen before. Dare I say, his best work yet? I'm in love with it! Will be on repeat for a LONG time.

Love it

Killer from start to finish. "Cool S#@!" is definitely my favorite.

Biography

Formed: Baltimore, MD

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Reflecting the party rap atmosphere of Baltimore's club scene, Spank Rock arrived as one of the best things to happen to both underground hip-hop and dirty rap, a pair of styles that rarely intermingle. The group formed as a collaboration between MC Naeem Juwan (aka Spank Rock) and producer XXXchange (Alex Epton). Both grew up in Baltimore, though never met until both had been making music elsewhere for several years. Juwan was rapping by his middle school years, and a friendship with producer Shawn...
