Best Rach 2 I've heard in quite a while
This is an amazing recording. Every phrase has room to breathe, the sound is sensational and the LSO plays flawlessly. This was a live concert, and the result of which is a more intense build-up to the conclusion. The only similar interpretation that ranks near this one is the one with Rattle/Los Angelos Philharmonic. Rattle is truly one of the great maestros of our time, and it shows, but yet Rozdestvensky is blessed with the better orchestra and much better sound. The colors on the abum artwork are perfect for describing this symphony.
The (second) best recording of Rachmaninov's greatest symphony
Ach, well, I prefer Zinman's recording by a small margin. But Rozhdestvensky puts his recording up front by being concerned with the music, not the tempo (what a revolutionary idea!). Highly recommended.
A great recording of this piece. Gennadi builds the emotion on top of itself, one minute to the next. Thoroughly sweeping and daunting performance.
