iTunes Review

Some called this jangle pop, thanks largely to Peter Buck’s countrified guitar; others called it college rock, due to its lo-fi production. However you slice it, R.E.M.'s 1983 debut is alternative rock perfection. It sees one of the driving forces of late 20th-century pop music going big, bold, and anthemic on propulsive rockers (“Radio Free Europe”), gentler Americana-tinged numbers (“Talk About the Passion”), and pensive ballads (“Perfect Circle”). For the fledgling alt-rock scene, this was no mere murmur.

Customer Reviews

I just downloaded some high school memories..

When I first bought Murmur on cassette in 1983, I instantly loved the album. I can remember how distinctly different this music was. I played for every friend this newly found gem of a band. R.E.M. where a breath of fresh air. Radio Free Europe got airplay on the local college radio stations but it was not the only good song on the album. Murmur was a strong creative effort start to finish. I played that cassette front to back on my boom box, in my Chevy Chevette and on my Walkman so many times that eventually, sadly, Murmur was no more. Other favorite bands, other technologies came and went until now, in 2013, I find myself downloading Murmur to my iPhone. As it was in 1983, Murmur is a breath of fresh air...

An Ethereal Magic Music that Carries through a Lifetime

I find it hard to believe anyone, or take anyone seriously, who would not give this five stars. If you don't like R.E.M.-style music, then you should neither listen to it nor give it a rating. This album is simply magical. It is melodic and emblematic of that time in the 80s when many bands were writing folky riffs and lyrics; yet Murmur captures a feeling and mood of that time that no other came close to. That said, it continues to amaze in 2014, when so much heart in music has fallen to the wayside. You could do no better with your money than to re-engage with an all-time classic; or, get to know it for the first time...it WILL be like that first crush you never quite got over.

Best R.E.M. album period.

As the my title implies, This is this best album they have created. It brings back memories of my young life and 69' Charger.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
