Editors’ Notes

Holy Diver forms a bridge through Dio’s history, merging Rainbow's explosive rock with Black Sabbath's magisterial darkness. Among his strengths, Ronnie James Dio understood that a frontman is only as powerful as the musicians who surround him, and though he may have named this group after himself, Dio is very much a band. Drummer Vinny Appice was held over from his time with Dio in Black Sabbath, while bassist Jimmy Bain knew the singer from their Rainbow years. As for the man himself, Dio throws himself into every song like a man hurling himself over a cliff. Few figures in rock history deliver with as much virility or conviction, but unlike, say, Robert Plant, Dio operated close to the earth, not from high atop a mountain. Holy Diver's terrific sonic attack is primarily due to talents of young guitar specialist Vivian Campbell (later of Def Leppard) and the unmatched velocity of Appice, one of the few drummers who could actually stand up in John Bonham’s massive shadow. From “Stand Up and Shout” to “Rainbow in the Dark” and the epic title song, Holy Diver is the consummate image of heavy metal circa 1983.

The group's leader was singer Ronnie James Dio, who had previously become acquainted with the metal masses as the frontman of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow from 1975-1978 and Black Sabbath from 1979-1982.
