Album Review

Ringside's excellent debut couldn't go down any easier, and for that the duo of Scott Thomas and the actor Balthazar Getty deserve pop music's highest props. Given the pair's Hollywood connections — a press release has mastermind Thomas designing clothes for No Doubt as a sideline while Getty's off on film shoots — they might have made a messier, less accessible disc and gotten away with it, but theirs is a sound that's tight, immediate, and appealingly modish. It's also beat-friendly, a setup that would seem at odds with Thomas' indie rock-style lyrics but isn't (for proof, look no further than the disaffected, down-in-the-dumps exercise in uplift that is "Struggle," Ringside's first song and a precedent-setter). Genre-melding — here, of pop, rock, and electronica — is rarely this surefooted; paired with Thomas' wiry, Eels-like voice, each song feels at once experimental and lived-in. Given its due, the disc could propel beat master Getty on a path that's purely musical — a career switch few might regret, considering the klunker that was White Squall.

The first time I heard the Pontiac Torrent commercial I was driven to find out who was making that music. Usually you're lucky if you find one song on an album that you like, but EVERY song on this album is a hit for me. Coming from the 60's and then reading Scott Thomas' bio about his inspiration coming from his uncle's old collection of albums from the 60's, made all the sense in the world as to why this music is so familiar to me. Keep up the good works guys and always remember to stay humble. You've taken genius from the past and combined it with your own genius to make one of the most unique sounds I've heard in decades.

I was happy to find this group from the Torrent Commercial, I love their sound. They are now on my top 10

Love, love, love it!

I noticed that when I listen to this album I walk with certain swagger, there's like an extra bounce in my step! The beats are hypnotic and the lyrics intense! I can't get enough.
