Sweeeeeet Buttery Blues Sound

I have never heard of this guy, but I'm hooked. I am a blues/jazz buff and this is some pretty good stuff. Why? Well, whoever this guy is, he doesn't try to over reach on the catalogue. I recognize several of the songs, but they don't sound tired because this guy isn't trying to overcome a song's legacy. This guy is singing them according to his vocal strength. I can feel that he respects the legacy of each song so he doesn't try to invent some new angle. These are probably personal favorites for this artist. Also, the arrangements are lush, but not sappy, sickening sweet. The backing instruments are at a minimum, but they are adequate, solid. Nothing beats a simple, straight-on delivery, and this set does just that. I love it when an artist brings us something in its most simple format. Translation: there aren't any gimmicks, tricks or compensating. So, if you like a sound that beckons back to the 1950's and 1960's in an up to date sound, then buy this album. Hah, and now I find out he's dead. That's so me to like the work of someone who's taken the big ride up. All my heroes are dead, or close to it.

Re-recordings

The title says it all. Brook Benton was one of the best. Go with the 20th Century album.

Stints on the gospel circuit preceded Benton's first secular session for Okeh in 1953, but his career didn't begin to take off until he teamed with writer/producer Clyde Otis. Benton co-wrote and sang hundreds of demos for other artists before frequent collaborator Otis signed his friend...
