iTunes Review

Following the dissolution of Operation Ivy, guitarist Tim Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman had a few false starts with other bands before finally settling on Rancid, who would go on to become one the premier punk acts of the ‘90s. The album is as much about a lifestyle as a social critique, and on songs like “Hyena” the band wears its street-rat status with pride: “Absent from political authority an animal I’ve become / Total disorder and confusion is the life style that I run / Permit me to do what I want and I will I'm a nomad to travel / Concrete, glass, stone and gravel.” Armstrong has perfected his punk rock voice, the hoarse rallying cry of a battered warrior. Like their heroes the Clash, Rancid turn their attention towards the working class. If not for its breakneck riffs, “Whirlwind” could be a Bruce Springsteen song: “My old man worked his troubled life in a nowhere dead end job / He drank the pain away I'll be damned if that's me having my dreams robbed / The working class carries a country that has been rotting inside for years / The pigs cuffed my old man in the front yard I saw through my eyes of tears.”

Their best

This is when rancid was a punk band! not very much ska none of that folk no pop not much of anything else but pure street punk nastyness. their name made sense back when this album came out

Rancid 1st album

Detroit is one of best songs written about that city. This is a really good album start to finish. Their 2nd album might be slightly better, but this one's a classic.

Just The Beginning

This is the first albulm of Rancid where Tim Armstrong had just come off of Alchoholism and LARS joins him and they make a amazing CD specifically aimed toward Punk and less toward Ska so its for people who like The Casualties, Downfall, OPIV, The Exploited, MISFITS, and other Fast Punk Music!!!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

One of the cornerstone bands of the '90s punk revival, Rancid's unabashedly classicist sound drew heavily from the Clash's early records, echoing their left-leaning politics and fascination with ska, while adding a bit of post-hardcore crunch. While some critics dismissed Rancid as derivative, others praised their political commitment, surging energy, and undeniable way with a hook. And, regardless of critical debate over their significance, the band's strengths made them perhaps the most popular...
