Album Review

More shout-alongs courtesy of Boston’s Street Dogs, and for their self-titled fifth album, the Hellcat recording artists show no signs of slowing. The former members of Dropkick Murphys, Welt, and the Bruisers are as rowdy and invigorated as ever. Apart from Mike McColgan’s voice sounding a little more husky with age, and new drummer Paul Rucker (who replaces ex-Mighty Mighty Bosstones drummer Joe Sirois) behind the set, it’s just another day for the Irish-American lads. With the type of crowd-rousing, drunken, bagpipe punk that Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and Scotch Greens deliver, McColgan takes issue with the system: targeting corporate greed (“Up the Union [EFCA]”), media overload (“Too Much Information”), fraudulent stock brokers (“Hang Him High [65 Billion]”), Oregon’s lousy economy (“Portland”), and FM radio programming (“Poor Jimmy”) in his lyrics. But to quote, “It doesn't really matter what the singer says, as long as punk rock is beating in those heads.”

Street Dogs = The Best Punk

This is a great album from an awesome working-class punk band. Not to insult the Dropkick Murphys, but they lost a lot when McColgan left. The Street Dogs recapture that Do or Die sound that I love so much.

Street dogs!

If you liked Fading American Dream I have three words for you...BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!

Moe fast paced then prior ones...Excellent cd

This is really fast paced but still has the Street Dogs message...Those people that say this is commercial are crazy. This adds fast pace songs into the mix so when you go to a show you have the old Street Dogs anthems mixed in with the new fast paced songs. These guys are far from commercial....if you want commercial go listen to Dropkick Murphy. Sorry but when Mike left the group they lost their way. Street Dogs great cd and one of the greatest bands live.

Boston, Massachusetts is a uniquely divided city, consisting not of amorphously defined neighborhoods like the ones that make up Manhattan, but small, semi-autonomous villages with names like Allston, Dorchester, Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain. Similarly, Boston's music scene has traditionally been equally insular, with little communication between the punk, indie rock, hip-hop, metal, folk, and Celtic scenes. One of the first bands to overlap some of these fiefdoms was the ska-punk-metal hybrid the...
