Editors’ Notes

A legendary emcee who influenced multiple generations of hip-hop lyricists, Big Daddy Kane got his start in the mid-'80s and was a key player in Marley Marl's Juice Crew, alongside Biz Markie, Roxanne Shanté, MC Shan, and Kool G Rap. His first solo album, Long Live the Kane, was released in 1988 and produced completely by Marley. It was a tremendous hit. With the perfect mix of machine-gun battle raps ("Set It Off"), goofy collabos ("Just Rhymin' with Biz"), super-smooth romance raps ("The Day You're Mine"), and a bravado anthem/crossover single ("Ain't No Half-Steppin'"), it remains a landmark release more than 25 years after the fact. Kane would record for decades to come with various degrees of success, but this remains his finest solo album—showcasing a hyper-lyrical, swagger-centric vibe that will never go out of style, while clearly establishing his rightful place in any G.O.A.T. discussion.

Long Live The Kane

It's about time y'all put this album and It's A Big Daddy Thing on here. Pay homage to the man who fathered both Jay-Z's and Biggie's style. Anyway, this album gets 5 stars just off of Raw, Ain't No Half Steppin' and Set It Off alone.

Emerging during hip-hop's massive creative expansion of the late '80s, Big Daddy Kane was the ultimate lover man of rap's first decade, yet there was more to him than the stylish wardrobe, gold jewelry, and sophisticated charisma. Kane possessed a prodigious rhyming technique honed from numerous B-boy battles; he could also be an Afrocentric consciousness-raiser versed in the philosophy of the Nation of Islam's Five Percent school, or a smooth urban soul crooner whose singing was no match for his...
