Quintessential lounge singer to Mr. Hell-bent-for-leather

Frankie Lane embodies the quintessential lounge singer with numbers like "Fever" and represents classic "elevator music" with numbers such as "Memories of Gold" but then jumps to the robust Western numbers like "Rawhide" and "Wanted Man." The arrangements are classic (or corny, depending on your point of view) late 50s numbers. For the price of $10, iTunes gives you 25 songs--a real bargain. Be aware, though, that I grew up with some of these Western numbers playing on an old LP, so my view is somewhat more forgiving than others may be.

Hell Bent for Leather! FL rules!

Wanted Man, High Noon, Gunfight at the OK Corral… some genius producer is going to match these songs up with some angry young men one day and get rich.

When I was in third grade we were told we could bring our favorite Christmas music in for a special listening experience before the holiday. I brought in Hell Bent for Leather with FL in total gunslinger mode on the cover, sneering at the camera.

I got my first real inkling of just how very abnormal I was that pre-Christmas day at school, and how it might not all be fun and games.

Did it prevent me from wearing my serape to school after seeing The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? …No it did not. And for that I am still wondering, where exactly were my parents? Anyway, great album.

Though his influence proved less durable than his record sales, Frankie Laine was one of the most popular vocalists of the 1950s, swinging jazz standards as well as half a dozen Western movie themes of the time with his manly baritone. Laine's somewhat artificial Western nature proved more successful in far-off England, where he set two chart records in 1953: his version of "I Believe" stayed at number one in the U.K. for an incredible 18 weeks,...
