Album Review

The Dutch rock quartet Diesel was a one-hit wonder, but what a hit it was! "Sausalito Summernight," a gloriously fun rocker about a California road trip, reached number 25 in 1981. Its parent album, Watts in a Tank, only hit number 68, but lead vocalist/guitarist Rob Vunderink, lead vocalist/guitarist Mark Boon, bass guitarist/background vocalist Frank Papendrecht, and drummer/keyboardist/background vocalist/producer Pim Koopman recorded several other strong songs too. The great thing about Watts in a Tank — originally released on Atlantic subsidiary Regency — is that One Way finally reissued it on CD in 2002; therefore, one can enjoy the full five-minute version of "Sausalito Summernight" with extra verses and an extended guitar solo. (The edited single version made its CD debut on 2000's Barry Scott Presents: The Lost 45s of the '70s & '80s, Vol. 2.) Diesel added elements of power pop and new wave to its tuneful, vocal harmonies-laden, guitar-based rock. "Sausalito Summernight," often mistakenly attributed to the Steve Miller Band, is a classic, but other Watts in a Tank highlights are "Goin' Back to China," "Down in the Silvermine," "Good Mornin', Day," "Remember the Romans," and "Bite Back."

Sausalito Summernight -- awesome!

I heard Sausalito Summernight on a Chicago radio station the other day and found myself tapping to its beats and excited about its melody -- what a cool song, even if it's 20+ years old! Download it; you'll replay it a few times...

Was on my way home the other day-no cd's to play-radio on-this song came on!! I couldn't believe my ears!!! I hadn't heard this song since I was a kid!!! Got home and searched iTunes for songs with 'SAUSALITO' in the title-it came up and I the rest is history!!! Every now and then a lost gem pops up and takes you back to the good ole days!!!!

Sausalito Summernights

I first heard this tune back in 81. I woke up to it with my morning alarm and instantly loved it. Unfortunately, the radio announcer didn't mention who it was, so I had to wait until I heard it again (several years later!!!). Since then, I turned a few fellow musicians on to Diesel. A few months ago, I emailed the radio show; Car Talk (with Click & Clack; The Tappet Brothers) asking to use Sausalito Summernights as their break-to-a-commercial tune. Who knows, maybe they'll use it. Now, I am exploring Diesel's other tunes. They certainly have (or had) strong arrangements, great lyrics, and awesome hooks. The engineering is also top-notch. Why these guys didn't go further is beyond me. They have a unique mixture of Steve Miller, 10CC, and Freddie Mercury. I love it!!! Dean

Years Active: '80s

The pop/rock quartet Diesel is among only a handful of Dutch acts to have charted with a single in the U.S. and, like most of those acts, their success was limited to one song. The band's lineup included drummer Pim Koopman, who had been a founding member of the progressive rock group Kayak, and guitarist/vocalist Rob Vunderink, who would later join Kayak. Koopman, who had become a staff producer for EMI following his stint with Kayak, and Vunderink had recorded a one-off single as Concrete before...
