EDITORS’ NOTES

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, Lucky Daye arrives with a head-turning artistic origin story: Raised in a religious cult in New Orleans, he wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music, but later fell in love with classic R&B after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Fittingly, Daye’s something of an old soul with a new twist, and on his second EP, he delivers funky baby-making jams and jazzy heartbreak ballads, slipping a bit of rap bravado into his silky melodies. The highlight is “Karma,” a reverent update of Ginuwine’s “Pony” made modern with slick hip-hop cadences.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics. Mastered for iTunes
