Finally, Joan Has Been Released State-Side!

I bought this album when it was a UK release only several months ago and it has finally arrived in the States - don't wait to download it was well worth getting in advance - she also, btw, is one of the most-excellent folks from The Dambuilders and has backed Rufus Wainwright in the past.

Real Life is the kind of album that makes you think and wonder about it days after the last time you heard it, and makes you kick yourself when you want to hear it right now all the way through and you can't find the cd in your car, or when you realize you haven't uploaded it onto your ipod yet (what?! impossible!). . . There's no artist that sounds close, or even close enough to stand in for joan's honest and effortless voice soaring through a mood, liberated from any pedestrian linear storytelling, intimate and timeless. Real Life is the kind of album that you have to listen to at least twice, and after that, it's like a great movie that keeps giving you something new every time you watch it. I thought I'd make comparisons: she's like Laura Nyro-cross-PJHarvey-cross-Chrissy Hines-cross-Nick Drake (the Pink Moon album) -- but it feels lame to me, probably because none of it is really true. It's an either-you-get-it-or-you-don't album -- if you're reading this, get it :).

Can't believe it took a year for this album to come out in the US... worth waiting for but.. why did they make us wait?? Record companies are such clueless anacronisms. Anyway, this album is just ... graceful, passionate, intimate, soothing, charming, alarming... just great. My favorite at the moment is the soulful Save Me, with its sultry whispery background vocals. The musicianship is exquisite, and Joan's voice is wonderful.

Described by Joan Wasser as "punk rock R&B" and "American soul music," Joan as Police Woman combine two of the biggest influences on her music: classic soul such as Al Green and Nina Simone and the rougher experimental sounds of Sonic Youth and Bad Brains. The mix never sounds contrived, thanks to the intuitive interplay of Wasser's vocals, violins, and guitar, Rainy Orteca's bass, and Ben Perowsky's percussion in the first version of the group. Later, Wasser employed a varied cast of collaborators....
