Album Review

Like the equally eccentric Tori Amos, Lil Haydn is an alternative singer-songwriter/violinist whose abstract pop/rock can be difficult to absorb but is ultimately quite rewarding. Radically uncompromising, Lily combines a pop/rock foundation with classical overtones (Haydn is classically trained), as well as elements of everything from urban contemporary and hip-hop to Middle Eastern and Mediterrean music. Uniting all of these elements into a cohesive whole may seem like a difficult task, but Haydn pulls it off with great artistic success. Many listeners will find "Someday," "Daddy," "Faithful One" and other offerings to be less than accessible, but those who accept Haydn on her own terms will realize just how much she has to offer. This is a CD that reveals more and more of its richness with each listen.

Refreshingly original

I have always been a fan of the female singer songwriter. If you are a fan of Tori Amos or Sophie B. Hawkins and even a fan of Imogen Heap, you will appreciate this Album. Are you a Rock and Roll fan? Then maybe you have heard Lili Haydn’s musical talent in such groups as: No Doubt, the Porno for Pyros, Hootie & the Blowfish, Tom Petty and even Robert Plant & Jimmy Page. She even played for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and mind you this is all before this outstanding album. She became one of the most sought-after professional Violinists in Los Angeles. One day during a discussion over music a friend of mine and I were debating the merits of symphonic techno (Orbital, Hybrid etc..) and he brought up Lili Haydn’s second album Light Blue Sun. I said it was more rock and roll then symphonic techno. The discussion was then focused on this album witch I would say is truly outstanding and for a solo effort ranks up there as one of my must have “desert island” albums. In 1994, she and her band began a two-year residency at the notorious Los Angeles Viper Room. She manage to craft some very powerful music during her stint there all before 1997. The iTunes samples do not give this Album justice, I would highly recommend downloading Faithful One as a good example of this album. Lili's soprano voice has to be the most incredible, angelic-like voice that I have ever heard. If you do not like female soprano voices then I would not recommend this Album, but if can deal with heart felt lyrics and symphonic Rock & Roll, then maybe this album is for you. Truly a wide spectrum of sounds is the best way to describe this Album.

Before launching her solo career, Lili Haydn established herself as a violinist to reckon with (no less than George Clinton pronounced her "the Jimi Hendrix of violin") by playing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Porno for Pyros, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Hootie & the Blowfish, Victoria Williams, Tom Petty, and Page & Plant. Haydn, the daughter of actress and comedian Lotus Weinstock and video artist David Jove, began playing violin as a child. She had previously been pursuing a career as...
