Spinnerette is an adrenaline surge of pulsating bass lines, propulsive guitar, and attitude all centered on the powerhouse vocals of Brody Dalle, once the snarling frontwoman of punk darlings the Distillers. Joined by fellow Distillers alum Tony Bevilacqua and Alain Johannes of Queens of the Stone Age, the album mixes slashing guitar riffs, edgy electro rock, and layered vocals to create an irresistible dark and dirty sound. Since comparisons to the Distillers are inevitable, it’s fair to say that Dalle is not interested in rehashing her past. Instead, she remains true to her raucous roots while showing that she can write, and deliver, songs that feature hooks, dynamics, and big choruses as on the ultra-catchy “Ghetto Love,” “All Babes are Wolves,” “Geeking,” and “Driving Song.” Dalle still belts it out but she also shows impressive range, even revealing a softer, melodic side on “Distorting a Code” and “Impaler.” After waiting four years for a Dalle solo release this may not be what some Distillers fans expected, but Spinnerette definitely delivers some infectious, high octane fun.
Though I love the influx of indie rock on iTunes, there seems to be an edge missing from most. This is the way modern rock should sound. There is no pretention here, just solid rock songs. It veers away form the borderline adult-contemporary/80's inspired line that a lot of my favs seem to be drifting towards. Everyone should add this to their music library. I wish more female artists could turn it up like her!
i've been a hardcore Distillers fan for years and years. Brody is outstanding. I started to outgrow the punk rock type of music and it seems Brody did as well. Around the time i removed The Distillers from my iPod, Spinnerette came around and filled that void! The album is outstanding with a totally fresh new approach. If you're looking for that Distillers sound, you will be disappointed. If you're looking for something more mature and different...THIS IS FOR YOU! great job Spinnerette, 5 stars!
Brody Spears Britney With New Spinnerette
It's easy to get disenfranchised amidst the ever growing pop-popularity female artist or female fronted-disney-manufactured-bands category, but Brody brings it (to turn a phrase from your pathetic generation) and reminds us all that pop music doesn't have to be spoken ill about when using the term- sometimes pop music is pop simply because it is popular, not because the self-manufactured soda popular people have also found a formula for music, too. Spinnerette is undeniably a pop album. These often short tracks are chalk full of catchy melodies that are fun, but also bring back the timelessness pop music once boasted. It reminds me of the Joan Jett days. Brody is an undisposable musician in a sea of floating Gaga-bage. Nothing but ghetto love for this new album - check out Baptized By Fire, but of course you will... it's the most popular track according to iTunes.
