Great Album, but iTunes needs to address something...

My main musical interests revolves around the world of J-Rock and J-Metal, my favorite band being Dir en grey. I was very excited to learn that iTunes hosts a fair amount of the music, and I've gotten the majority of my music off of here. Despite this, there is one thing that consitently annoys me when I look up these foreign artists on iTunes: the number of typoes and misspellings in regards to songs and even artist's names. For example, "Dir en grey" is presented as "Dir En Grey" on iTunes and "D'espairsray" is actually spelled "D'espairsRay." I find it disrepectful towards the artist to spell their NAME wrong. These mistakes hold true in the names of songs as well. Track number seven on this album is named "R.E.M. -Fuyu no Genchou-" and more minorly track number 4 is spelled "Kouhaku." Similar mistakes appear in songs by Dir en grey and Girugamesh as well. Again, I find this ignorance to be insulting and disrepectful to the artists and their fans who know their favorite bands deserve this respect. I understand this is a problem I can easily fix by going into the song options and changing what I need to, but that is not the point; I should not have to fix something that should not have been broken in the first place. Several others and I would strongly appreciate if these problems were addressed.

Not their best, but a sign that they're evolving musically.

This is a wonderful album, as good as anything we could expect from D'espairsRay. But with this album, they experimented a bit more with their sound, taking a few more risks or ventures into different genres. But somehow they almost always managed to pull it off. My views on "REDEEMER": 1) Lizard. I'll be upfront - "Lizard" has quickly become my favorite D'espairsRay song, and it's an absolutely perfect opening song for "REDEEMER". The addition of a keyboard adds an interesting touch to the chorus. It's one of the darker songs on the album, having a more industrial flair that'll appeal to their older fans. It's energetic, unrelenting, and overall an awesome track. 5/5 2) BRILLIANT. This song lives up to its name - it's surprisingly bright for this band's typical fare, but that by no means makes it a bad song. I highly encourage that you look up the English translation, because their lyrics are actually quite beautiful and encouraging. An unexpected gem of a song. 5/5 3) REDEEMER. There's a reason this is the title song of the album - it has a slight mad tinge to it, especially once you see the PV for it. The song begs for moshing, and it's the type of song you desperately wish you could play on your guitar. The riffs are incredible and addicting. 5/5 4) Kohaku. And now we get to the lighter material - there's a twinkling, delicate flair to this song amidst the guitars and Hizumi's familiar vocals. It's a pleasant song, balancing between light and dark quite nicely. 4/5 5) KAMIKAZE. The verses have an interesting use of vocals - distant, echoing, almost otherworldly - but the chorus is disappointing. It sounds like the typical pop-rock ballad and cuts the originality out of the song. 3/5. 6) Lost in re:birth. This completely makes up for "KAMIKAZE" - it's more of their industrial style, but much more layered and with very sharp guitars. Hizumi's vocals range from his killer screams to soaring vocals, which adds to the mood of the piece as a whole. 4/5 7) R.E.M. -Fuyu no Genchou-. It's a ballad that begins with a simple drum-guitar pattern, accompanied with strong vocals. The music lives up to its namesake ("winter auditory illusion" = "fuyu no genchou"). The chorus is what makes the song go from lovely but merely passable to... well, downright beautiful. It's emotional and has the intensity I've come to love and expect from their music. 8) HORIZON. A very light track that reeks of An Cafe or L'arc~en~Ciel - it's a nice song, but far too light and generic for DespairsRay. Easily forgetable and steeped too far into the pop genre for this band. 2/5 9) MASQUERADE. This sort of redeems "HORIZON" for me a bit - it lacks a certain something that their previous songs on the album did, but by no means is it a bad song. It just... lacks a certain kick. Hizumi's growls feel forced, and don't carry nearly as much power as they usually do. 4/5 10) Yozora. Every fan of the [Coll:set]-era D'espairsRay will weep when they hear this song. It's by far the worst song not only on this album, but in D'espairsRay's entire discography. I'm sorry - I love the boys to death, but this song is terrible. 1/5 11) PARADOX 5. One of the more unusual songs they've made, but I think it's also one of their best. It has a very tribal feel to it, combined with violins and piano to create a very interesting and enjoyable song. The atmosphere really makes the song. One reviewer for this album said it far better than I could: "The song sounds very wast, almost as if it embraces the whole world, the echoing, female backvocals give off a dramatic seal, but at the same time it sounds distant, cold, sad, somehow helpless as if it is caught in a eternity of hopelesness and transience". 12) HEAVEN'S COLOR. Another song that's brighter than their usual material, but unlike "Yozora", this is one pulled off quite well. To me at least, there's a slight bittersweet feeling to the song that richens the emotions conveyed - warmth, happiness, reminiscing, longing. It's not a sad song, but more the type of song you'd expect at the end of a movie when a character stares into the sunset, smiling as they remember the things that once gave them pain. It's a very uplifting song. 5/5


Lizard and Paradox 5 are must haves!
Brilliant and Redeemer are great as well.
The only song I really didnt like was Yozora, but none the less an excellent album.
