Album Review

Classical guitarist David Russell performs 11 flamenco-influenced pieces for solo guitar on Telarc's Spanish Favorites for Guitar. Russell spent his formative years learning guitar from his father on the small Spanish island of Menorca, and his love and comfort with the cultural stylings of the Spanish guitar shine brightly on this collection. His interpretations of these moody and moving works by composers Joaquin Malats, Francisco Tárrega, Enrique Granados, Isaac Albénez, and Antonio Ruiz-Pipó are performed cleanly and expertly, with the warmth and passion of a seasoned flamenco master.

Customer Reviews

I bought this album because I had seen Mr. Russell perform live at my university. His style is exquisite and his execution is flawless as to be expected from such a great virtuoso of the genre. Sitting eyes closed, you can easily feel as though you were swept away to Spain on melodious winds. His live performance is quite a treat; I've been to three classical guitar performances and his was the warmest, friendliest, and most engaging. With this in mind I must rate this a 5 star for anyone who enjoys classical guitar or even for those who are just slightly interested.

The ITunes reviewer doesn't know Spanish classical music

Great albun, but this has nothing to do with flamenco. The songs are not flamenco and the style of play is not flamenco. Flamenco is gypsy music originating in the southern region of Spain. A completely different style. This is Spanish classical guitar, which is composed by masters.

This is Not Flamenco Music

I agree with the earlier guy: the Itunes review is really off. The reviewer seems to assume that because it's Spanish music played on a guitar it must be flamenco. Wrong. It's classical music. Albeniz, Granados, Malats, etc were classical composers, romantic period. Likewise, David Russell is not a flamenco guitarist. He's a classical guitarist, which is altogether different from flamenco, and considered one of the best. I wish they'd get someone who knows what they are talking about to write these things.

David Russell is an exceptional classical guitarist with a solid international concert and recording career. He is noted for including new or unfamiliar music in most of his recitals and for his command a wide spectrum of tone colors. When he was five, Russell's parents moved the family to Menorca, a Spanish island in the Mediterranean. His father, an artist, was an avid amateur guitarist, so it was natural for him to pick up the instrument, and his father became his first teacher. He cannot remember...
