A Welcome Re-Release

This is the first official digital release of this wonderful work by Mark Blitzstein who is most famous for writing the modern English translation to Kurt Weill's "Mack the Knife" in the mid-1950s. Collectors have been waiting for this for a long time and Masterworks Broadway does not disappoint. In glorious early stereo Columbia Masterworks sound, the transfer to digital is successfully spacious even though minimal or no remastering was done (from my understanding.) The work follows the Lillian Hellman play closely and Blitzstein's music adds to the intensity of the drama. The forces of the New York City Opera work well here, and according to the liner notes, the recording was done in one day(!) Now that the Columbia and Victor theater catalogues have been merged, we're all looking forward to more of these "buried" treasures.

REGINA (Broadway cast Recording)

Wow! I had only ever read about this piece and heard the John Mauceri/Samuel Ramey recording (which is only OK in spite of being the newer recording.) If you are looking for a great piece of Music theatre with genuinely operatic overtones, look no further! As rich and satisfying as ALLEGRO, TROUBLE IN TAHITI, MASS and many of the works by LOESSER , WEILL and SONDHEIM, this is rip snorting southern fired Melodrama drenched in the rich gravy of Blitzsteins extraordinary melodies! This is the rare occasion when a wonderful play has made an equally wonderful piece of Music theatre. The recording features performances that practically explode throuhg the speakers with force, humor dimension and nuance all balanced perfectly with the needs of the material. WHAT A FIND AND WHAT A TREASURE THIS RECORDING IS! Well worth the time! A TERRIFIC RECORDING OF A BRILLIANT PIECE OF MUSIC THEATRE!
