Really Special

This is one of the "produced" Daniel Johnston albums (so it isn't scratchily recorded tapes of just DJ singing while playing the organ). The songs all have an eerie disorienting quality (instead of disorienting, perhaps a better adjective would be "dreamlike"). Most songs trod upon Johnston's usual ground ("Funeral Girl" about lost love "Billions Rock" about becoming a rock star like The Beatles), but because of the oddness of the music, the themes seem unusually fresh. There is a lot of sad slow guitars here, balanced out by sad piano playing. This is not a fun record, but it is so true to its artistic intention, it comes across as exhilarating. Especially good is "Dream Scream" (with its haunting coda), "Party" and "Thrill". The last two songs ("Wedding Ring Bells Blue" and "I Lose") will either depress you immeasurably or (like me) thrill you with their poetry and beauty.
