iTunes Review

Hailing from the Hunters Point section of San Francisco, the RBL Posse were the first group to put Bay Area hip-hop on the map with their surprise 1992 hit “Don’t Give Me No Bammer Weed.” Fleet-footed and foulmouthed, the song was irresistible without being overly commercial. The rest of A Lesson to Be Learned cruises on an assortment of perfectly pitched samples, from Steve Miller (“G’s by the 1,2,3’s”) to Funkadelic (“B**** on the Ding Dong”). Rough around the edges in all the right ways, it’s an album that could have come only from the underground and not the industry.

A classic from the Bay's golden age

The word classic gets thrown around alot these days,but this album truly fits the description. It is without a doubt one of if not the most influential and best rap album from the Bay Area. In my opinion,the quality of Bay Area rap has steadily declined for the past 5 years or so. It's funny because during that same time the popularity of it has gone up dramatically. From about 1992 to 2000,the Bay was turning out amazing,cutting-edge rap from acts like Mac Mall,Cellski,JT the Bigga Figga,and many many more. Now it seems to be just about turning out as many albums as possible. The hyphy movement has completely watered down the Bay rap scene. But if you want to hear some great rap then definitely pick this album up.

RBL = Pioneers

This album will be recognized as a true classic one day--for now, it's waiting for nubies to discover. It's amazingly fresh after all these years...this album stands the tests of time--which is why is is destined to become a classic...Who was sampling Steve Miller Band, laying down sick beats and sprayin' a tight flow back in 92'??? RBL. word. Mark

Thanks solely to their own independent distribution through In-A-Minute Records, RBL sold almost half a million copies of their first two albums, Lesson to Be Learned and Ruthless By Law.
