Album Review

Southern Pacific tried to cross country and rock, sometimes with mixed results. Born from the ashes of the Doobie Brothers and Emmylou Harris' Hot Band, Southern Pacific's eponymous debut doesn't have a bad cut on it. Rock songs like Tom Petty's "Thing About You" and "Luann," which was written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones of Foreigner, dove-tail nicely with original cuts and more standard country fare from the likes of Rodney Crowell ("Bluebird Wine") and Chuck Pyle ("Jaded Lover"). In all, the album is a very promising first effort.

Good debut

Labeling Southern Pacific a "country rock" act may be a bit misleading - it's more accurate to call the group country with some rock credentials and sensibilities. A good mix of original songs and covers, "Southern Pacific" is a fine introduction to a group that peaked on its next album. Standouts here are "The Blaster" and a rocking duet with Emmylou Harris, "Thing About You." The individual members bring impressive pedigrees to the group - Doobie Brothers Keith Knudsen and John McFee; and Elvis' TCB Band members Jerry Scheff and Glen Hardin. What separated Southern Pacific from other "country rock" groups, though, were the vocals of Tim Goodman, who sings lead on the group's strongest songs here and on the follow-up, "Killbilly Hill."

Biography

Formed: 1985 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Country

Years Active: '80s

Southern Pacific formed in 1983 around vocalist Tim Goodman, guitarist John McFee, drummer Keith Knudsen, bassist Jerry Scheff, and keyboardist Glenn D. Hardin. Both McFee and Knudsen were ex-Doobie Brothers; this rock & roll background would continue to tarnish for some the band's country-rock sound. Despite the adversity, Southern Pacific secured a deal with Warner, who issued its self-titled debut in 1985. A mixed bag, the album featured Tom Petty-penned rock songs alongside more countrified material...
