"Return to the Moon" by EL VY on iTunes

EDITORS’ NOTES

EL VY is a low-key collaboration between two high-minded guys: Matt Berninger (of indie-rock pinups The National) and multi-instrumentalist Brent Knopf (of Ramona Falls and the proggy Portland crew Menomena). A moody, funky (and subtly funny) album, Return to the Moon charts a serpentine journey through the hazy backyard barbecues and surreal afterparties of Berninger’s recently adopted Los Angeles. “Went to bed and woke up inside another man’s head/Nobody noticed,” Berninger mumbles on the title track—it’s a dry-witted punch line on an album that's full of them.

Soooooo good! Like peanut butter and jelly!!

BuddyfromPDX,

As a Portlander and long time dan of menomena and the national I couldn't be more excited about this effort! First track is fantastic!

Excellent first track

lehouc01,

Berninger’s baritone voice is the perfect anchor to the funky, bouncy music. Strange, interpretive lyrics add to the whimsy. Awesome start. We should expect nothing less than greatness when Berninger is involved.

About EL VY

A collaboration between National vocalist/lyricist Matt Berninger and multi-instrumentalist/producer Brent Knopf of Menomena and Ramona Falls, El VY ("pronounced like a plural of Elvis; rhymes with 'hell pie'") came to fruition in 2015. Friends and occasional tour mates for over a decade, Berninger and Knopf had been sending music to each other for years, but it wouldn't be until early 2015 that those audio snapshots would come to life. The resulting 4AD-issued Return to the Moon, the duo's debut studio long player, pairs Berninger's distinct, sardonic wit and skewed narrative talents with Knopf's imaginative production and versatile arrangements. The first single from the LP, "Return to the Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, With Crescendo)", dropped in late September, with the full-length following later that October. ~ James Christophe Monger
