J. Cole's Dreamville crew close out 2015 with a surprise gift

The artists of Dreamville Records, J. Cole, Bas, Cozz, Omen, Ari Lennox and Lute, have secretly been planning to release a compilation album for this year's end and now it's out! A little different from how Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive was dropped with just some weeks' warning last year, this Revenge of the Dreamers II group project was released late Monday night (Dec. 7) with virtually no warning. With some sources calling it a mixtape and others an album, the true species of this animal is more suggestive of an album. Fully investigated concepts, new beats, special choruses and quality assurance from top to bottom - Revenge of the Dreamers II draws expectable results from its artists but is a fine product still.

Music-wise, the gentle Dreamville-esque beats combine flavors from each artist's style of music, and the vocalists sound off exactly as they have in the past, meaning exactly like we're used to. J. Cole is traditionally lyrical and intriguing in his distinct tone of voice, Cozz is straight to the point and unfiltered, Bas is metaphorical and alternative with his rhyme-conception, and Omen is in his own poetic kaleidoscopic universe. Together they show swagger and knowledge, throwing back into their mics everything they've been given by the everyday grind, love, the entrapment of the mind and their escape from it. In short, they're both up, and down, on life here.

Of course this isn't Dreamville's first Revenge album. It's basically a familiar round two since the first was released January last year. We get to know new ones Lute and Ari Lennox a little more, but there's not much new from the more experienced regulars of the label except for a good lot of nice new raps. Besides getting everyone together, Revenge II has not decided on another goal, i.e. they haven't discovered any new land on this endeavor. J. Cole's first verse in the first song "Folgers Crystals" is particularly insightful and eye-opening, and fortunately, the rest proceeds in the same vein. The album itself was a surprise (it was sprung on us without announcement), but inside, it has essentially nothing to catch us off guard. Overall though, this is a solid rap album from start to finish.

Cole won't disappoint... but BASSSY

We all know that J Cole is going to murder this, as he does with everything, but Bas is surely one of the rising names in the game. He does not get enough credit. Going to be lit, feel the buzz (bas reference)
