Album Review

Contradictions that confound expectations of Ill Niño pop up throughout the band's debut disc. The gruesome cover and politically charged song titles imply a harder-than-thou thrash-fest that never materializes, as the band is one of the most sonorous of their ilk. At the same time, the Spanish surnames and band moniker implies gimmickry, but Ill Niño ain't a Puya; the Spanish lyrics and Latin flavor enhances without becoming overwrought. At times, Revolution Revolucíon seems almost too sedate, and it does fall into some of the usual rap-metal trappings in spite of itself, but overall this is an excellent debut for fans who lean more to the cerebral side of modern metallic endeavors. Regardless of what the iTunes review says, this album is what a lot of latin metal wishes it could be. Although, the band seems to leave the turntable/mixed beats in their later albums this is an awesome initial album. Anyone might recognize What Comes Around from commercials, radio and TV spots but I seriously recommend the tracks God Save Us, Unreal, Liar, I Am Loco, and No Murder. I have the original 13 track album so the last 5 tracks were foreign to me until now but With You is also a surprise ending with the acoustic ballad. This is a good buy if you love latin metal!

Most of its members are of South American descent, resulting in a type of music that combines crunchy heavy metal with Latin rhythms and lyrics that alternate between English and Spanish. The idea of Ill Nino began when former Pro Pain member Chavarri was touring as an interim member...
