This five-song sampler perfectly encapsulates MC Lyte’s range of talents. Contrary to popular belief, those talents don't start with her being a “great female rapper.” While Lyte was certainly one of the most visible and gifted rappers at a time when women were rarely seen in hip-hop, her assets as a musician have little to do with gender. If anything, her greatest talent was her ability to bridge the party rap of the '70s to the street rap of the '80s and '90s. This is illustrated by “Cold Rock a Party,” in which Lyte goes over Diana Ross’s disco anthem “Upside Down,” employing a delivery that's as cold and precise as that of early Jay Z (a rapper with whom Lyte has much in common). Her superlative storytelling skills are shown in “Poor George,” while “I Am the Lyte” and “Cha Cha Cha” confirm her impeccable taste in funky beats. Her flow was always relaxed but fiery. Yet when rap got angry in the early '90s, Lyte proved she could also be solely fiery. Released at a time when Ice Cube was storming the scene, “Ruffneck” emits a similarly exhilarating, white-hot rage.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Lyte began rhyming at the age of 12, which eventually led to a single, "I Cram to Understand U," which led to a recording contract with the First Priority label. MC Lyte's debut full-length, Lyte As a Rock, surfaced...
