Rhino Hi-Five: The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - EP

This five-song sampler features the single versions of Frank Zappa's "Help, I'm a Rock" and the group's own "Transparent Day" from the Part One album and "Smell of Incense" from Vol. Two, plus the album versions of "Shifting Sands" and "I Won't Hurt You," also from Part One. The band came of age in the psychedelic '60s, and its sound reflects the era's changing sounds. The Zappa cover is high weirdness, while the remaining cuts are relatively conventional, featuring refreshing melodies, folk-rock guitars, and smooth vocals that often hide disturbances in the lyrics. "I Won't Hurt You" sports a foreboding sense of menace in its muted delivery. In terms of the band's full albums, Part One, Vol. 2, and A Child's Guide to Good and Evil come highly recommended.
