Stellar recording of one of the greatest operas

This recording is under-rated. Most people go for the Solti (also a great recording), but I feel this one is superior to the Solti. Studer, however much I dislike her in bel canto and Mozartian roles, does a perfect job as Salome. Her Salome sounds youthful, mischievious, and utterly insane. As far as Terfel, you can't go wrong with him in any role, and as John the Baptist he makes the role more "holy" with that rich baritone voice of his. I have the Solti recording with Nilsson and however wonderful Nilsson is as Salome, some of the time she is not convincing as a 14 or 15 year old girl. I also have Jessye Norman as Salome with Ozawa conducting. Avoid that recording! Norman sounds like a 40 year old Brunnhilde singing Salome and Ozawa has little control over the orchestra. This, as far as I know is the best recording of Salome.

Apple must fix format issues

Sonically this is a beautiful recording and the performances are top notch. But, because there are 8 to 10 different combinations of vocalists, each combination listed as a different artist, iTunes read this one album as in fact 8 to 10 albums, each with it's own identical cover and not able to be played in order. I had to select the group as a new playlist and then edit the information for the group, changing the artist to Richard Strauss and then copying all the names to a single entry and entering that as album artist for all tracks in order to listen to this in order as a single album. Apple needs to make sure that the artist for any album such as this is one single entity.

I agree the Apple bug is an enormous aggravation

I will not purchase this album and am hesitant about purchasing the others because of the nightmare I had when I purchased Britten's Peter Grimes (the Royal Opera Hosue Recording) see my comment there

Genre: Classical

Cheryl Studer's repertoire is among the widest-ranging of those of any soprano, ranging from the Baroque to the twentieth century; her roles include Violetta (La Traviata), Die Kaiserin in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Odabella in Verdi's Attila, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Floyd's Susannah, and nearly all of the lyric Wagner roles: Elizabeth (Tannhäuser), Elsa (Lohengrin), Freia (Das Rheingold), and Sieglinde (Die Walküre). She has also explored the art song repertory extensively; in all these...
