Album Review

Rick Springfield contributed to some of the most congenial sounding pop that braced radio throughout the 1980s. With 17 singles gracing the Top 40 charts, it was evident that both his charming persona and his hook-induced choruses led to his successful ten-year stint. While his music is lyrical fluff, it's the friendly guitar riffs and contagious three-minute rock formula that sometimes takes on a love song approach and boldly represents the feel-good emptiness of '80s pop. This greatest-hits collection is one of the best that Springfield has to offer, since it doesn't suffer from any unnecessary tracks or lose interest with overkill. His pop fervidness is perfectly outlined by the number one charted "Jessie's Girl" and the staccato rhythm of "I've Done Everything for You," which was penned by Sammy Hagar. His best ballads are represented by the syrupy "Affair of the Heart" and the teenage angst of "State of the Heart." Songs like "Love Is Alright Tonight" and "Love Somebody" show Springfield at his most energetic and are solid checkmarks for him in the rock & roll column. Even later material like "Rock of Life" from 1988 footnotes the type of transparent pop that Springfield produced, held together only by its meaningless but contagious keyboard froth. Other collections do offer more tracks, but none are as substantial as the songs laid out here, which are a truly solid dozen.

Great 80's Pop Rock

Always loved Rick Springfield - not the soap opera guys that my mom knew - but the rocker. C'mon - no one has reviewed this classic set? Jessie's Girl will always be a classic and all the other songs rock too sept Bop til you Drop - thats a little uncool Rick.

The best!

This is one of the best collections of Rick Springfield's songs ever put together. From his early hits to his later pop songs with a definitive message this album delivers nothing but the best! Happy listening!

Seminal 80s material

Like so many of his Aussie brethren, Rick Springfield has a gift for a nice taught melody, fine musicianship and, above all, good lyrics. Far from being the "fluff" of many a reviewer, the songs hit home for most teenagers from the 80s. Some may call it formulaic. I call it fine rock music.

Although Rick Springfield's music was frequently dismissed as vapid teen idol fare, his best moments have actually withstood the test of time far better than most critics would ever have imagined, emerging as some of the best-crafted mainstream power pop of the 1980s. A singer turned soap opera star turned singer, Springfield was born Richard Springthorpe on August 23, 1949, in Sydney, Australia, to a military man; the family moved around Australia and England a great deal during Rick's childhood,...
