Sweet Danger

Sweet Danger

Back in the early ‘90s, Suzy Bogguss brightened country radio with her folksy, Western-slanted sound. Of late, she’s tacked in a jazz-pop direction, as evidenced by 2007’s Sweet Danger, and her honeyed vocal tone and caressing delivery make her a natural for the stripped-down acoustic settings found on these tracks. Backed by a small combo, Bogguss sings with an easy intimacy suggesting an after-hours gig at an uptown lounge. For an artist typically more sunny than sultry, she turns in a convincingly sensuous performance on “Chain Lover,” and tunes like “The Bus Ride” and the title track strike the right mood of hopeful discovery in their depictions of dawning romance. “Baby July” offers a sensitive childhood tale, while “It’s Not Gonna Happen Today” details a slowly-collapsing relationship. Most of the tunes here simmer in the midtempo range, though “Right Back Into The Feeling” adds a little blues-rock spark to the mix. The most surprising moment is Suzy’s treatment of Chicago’s “If You Leave Me Now” as a soft-lit nightclub ballad. These heartfelt and quietly wise songs are some of Bogguss’ strongest work to date.
