Great conducting and great playing from the Met orchestra. James Levine sets the standards for Verdi once more. The tempos are fantastic, lively and spirited and the slow ones are flexible, despite some of them being pushed by Pavarotti's limits. The singing is poor at best. Plenty of splicings. All the three leads are in the last throws of their careers, and it shows. Pavarotti is in trouble and needs fast tempos but throws amplfied high notes here and there. Studer sets a low standard that will be hard to beat. The high notes notes are dry at best and produced with difficulty. Chernov quit singing shortly after this recording, may be too late, even though still a young man. It is sad that in the 90's DG couldn't come up with better casting. Certainly worth listening for the conducting.
