Ringo Starr continued to tap his extensive network of musician friends to help him out as he moved over to Atlantic Records, where he replaced producer Richard Perry with Atlantic’s in-house man, Arif Mardin. Mardin stuck closely to the sound that had made Ringo an unexpected solo success. John Lennon wrote and played piano on the excellent “Cookin’ (In the Kitchen of Love).” Paul McCartney supplied the music to “Pure Gold” and added backing vocals. George Harrison gave “I’ll Still Love You” to the project. Eric Clapton wrote “This Be a Song” and played guitar, while Melissa Manchester provided backing vocals. Dr. John and Harry Nilsson can also be heard on various tracks. Ringo and Vini Poncia wrote the country song “Cryin’,” an album highlight. The set ventures between modest rock (“A Dose of Rock & Roll,” Ringo’s last Top 40 hit until 1981’s “Wrack My Brain”) and modest ‘70s-styled pop (“You Don’t Know Me at All”).
