iTunes Editors’ Notes

Duran Duran's debut earned them plenty of attention, but the follow-up, Rio, made them international stars. It took all the ideas introduced on the first LP and polished them to an ear-popping sheen. The rich production here makes more use of Nick Rhodes' synth textures than before, and the tunes' elegantly arcing melodies are perfectly framed by the graceful arrangements, expanding on the Bowie/Roxy Music side of the band's influences. The perfect pop confections of the title track and "Hungry Like the Wolf" helped put Duran Duran's faces on teenage bedroom walls the world over, but artful cuts like "The Chauffeur" showed something deeper.

Customer Reviews

Pretty boy looks aside, they guys played their instruments, wrote their own music and really tore it up love.

Simon’s lyrics are not bubble gum teen angst drivel. They are just the opposite. But he very clever to keep a hook and the chorus simple, but read any of the verses and you will actually be impressed and need to think.

John Taylor is an incredibly underrated bass player. That Englishman can really lay down a serious bass groove. You can hear how Chic influenced his playing and style and why DD songs are infectious.

Andy Taylor know when and where to let loose or when to sit back and help move the song along.

Nick is a synth ane soundscaping genius.

Simon adds the right touches in the songs.

Rio, Girls on Film are obviously the big tunes on Rio but all the songs are very good. None are just fillers to fill up time.

Saw this band a few years ago when the entire original line up regrouped. And I was blown away how great they are live. Never saw them in their 80s heyday, as I was more a rocker, but these blokes can do toe to toe with any rock band out there in a live situation. Amazing.

Love this album

But this album came out in 1982 not 1993.

Love it

Hungry Like The Wolf is the favorite, but The Chauffer is also amazing. And this album actually came out in '82. The reason it says 1993 is because that's when the remastered edition was released.

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that their pop-funk — described by the group as the Sex Pistols meets Chic — would never have made them international pop stars. While Duran Duran did have sharper pop sensibilities than their new romantic contemporaries like Spandau...
