EDITORS’ NOTES

In the opening moments of Cheers to the Fall, Andra Day sings, “There’s nothin’ I can sing now, that ain’t been sung before.” It might seem like a confession, but as Day blasts through her debut album with grit and style to spare, she proves to be a soul revivalist with refreshing verve—and a kindred spirit to powerhouse singers like Etta James and Amy Winehouse. Most of the music is brassy retro-soul with a sweltering Stax inflection (“Forever Mine,” “Gold,” “Gin & Juice”), but when Day opens up with a big-hearted ballad like “Rise Up,” she’s just as stunning.

A Day to Admire

Eric Zuniga,

Andra mixes old doo-wop, soul and jazz to embody the magic that leaves her lips. She sends shivers through her lyrics with the comfort of a riff, while bringing us to our knees for more. Definitely a second coming of yesteryear music. Truly magnetic.

True Artistry

Label 78,

This album has been three years in the making and it is well worth the wait. This is a biography of truth and faithfulness told thru music. Andra Day is an artist molded from an industry that no longer exists. Each song is heart felt because they represent true experiences of hers that only she could tell. This album will be a source of heeling to many. Enjoy.

About Andra Day

Retro-soul singer and songwriter Andra Day is from San Diego, California, where she performed in church and enrolled at the School of Creative and Performing Arts. After she graduated from the school, she leaned toward contemporary R&B and pop, but was eventually drawn back to the classic jazz and soul vocalists she heard as a youngster. A major break came when a performance of hers was caught by Kai Millard Morris, who subsequently took some of Day's music to husband Stevie Wonder, who in turn connected Day with music industry veteran Adrian Gurvitz. Aligned with Gurvitz and Jeffrey Evans' Buskin label, Day built up a YouTube following and eventually signed with Warner Bros. After some singles, as well as a version of "Mississippi Goddamn" contributed to Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone, Day released her debut album, Cheers to the Fall (2015), for which she collaborated extensively with the likes of Gurvitz and Raphael Saadiq, among others. "Only Love" alone featured bass from Pino Palladino, drums from Questlove, scratching from DJ Jazzy Jeff, and additional support from the Dap-Kings horn section. In 2016, Day delivered the holiday-themed EP Merry Christmas from Andra Day. ~ Andy Kellman
