iTunes Editors’ Notes

With producer Bill Laswell and various sessions musicians, including Ginger Baker, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Steve Vai, Public Image Ltd. mocks its own deliberate “generic” quality by naming the album Album. Except with former Sex Pistols’ singer John Lydon corralling the sessions with Laswell, the effect is something else altogether. It’s not “generic,” but a fully produced piece of dense alternative/hard rock, led by one of the most distinctive lead singers in the business. “FFF” begins things on the fast track, jumping right into the craziness with nary a pause. The hit single, “Rise,” is about as perfect a single Lydon ever composed, with its swooping hypnotic bass lines wrapping themselves around the various elliptical lyric lines that sum up with “Anger is an energy.” “Fishing” subdues the attack slightly with a modest, layered arrangement that makes Lydon sound as if he were singing from a command post. “Home” actually takes a streetwise strut with churning electric guitars that without Lydon’s participation could be a mainstream hard-rock anthem. But Lydon never takes the easy way out.

This is NOT "First Issue"

Come on iTunes get it together will you? This ("Compact Disc") is not the PIL album "First Edition" released in 78 but the write up is for that album. I WANT the first PIL album but it's not available on iTunes...yet.

Amazing, though understandably annoying to some

Like other have said, why does iTunes list this as 1978 when it should be 1985 (initial release)??? I was only a cursory PIL listener before this album came out and I was astounded when it did. It's surprisingly 'catchy' compared to earlier PIL, yet still not quite mainstream. I loved the album concept too ("LP"/"Cassette"...and later "Compact Disc"), which I understand John Lydon was trying too irritate the record company at the time...AND make fun of popular music as PRODUCT, not ART. He may not often be the voice of reason, but there's often reason behind his thinking, even if you don't see it. I never really cared about The Sex Pistols, but something about PIL really intrigued me...and when I saw John(ny) being interviewed a few times, I saw a truly interesting person there, though I have to admit I still don't know how so, but he's no idiot.

Shouldn’t this be titled “Download"

Just sayin'

One of the first and most significant post-punk bands, Public Image Ltd. (PiL) were originally a quartet led by singer John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten, born January 31, 1956) and guitarist Keith Levene, who had been a member of the Clash in one of its early lineups. The band was filled out by bassist Jah Wobble (John Wordle) and drummer Jim Walker. It was formed in the wake of the 1978 breakup of Lydon's former group, the Sex Pistols. For the most part, the band's early incarnation devoted itself...
