Editors’ Notes

People who don't care for country music could still fall for Rissi Palmer's self-titled debut. For starters, she co-wrote eight of the 12 songs here, bringing some much needed bloom to Nashville's old and sometimes predictable assembly line. Also, her voice deftly balances beauty and strength in a way that often renders peripheral all those fiddles, banjos, mandolins and pedal steel guitars. Just listen to the swooning opener "Hold On to Me." Palmer's singing equalizes backbone and emotion with subtlety and restraint. She doesn't oversing like many of her vocal gymnast contemporaries and as a result her inflections soar above all instrumentation, affirming that this isn't a country song — it’s a love song. Conversely, "Country Girl" is an unapologetically heartland-heavy twang-rocker furthering the notion that country is a state of mind. It's one hell of a hit that's sure to garner many a Gretchen Wilson comparison, though it doesn't pander to the backwoods trailer kitsch of Wilson's "Redneck Woman." And the sauntering cool of "Love You Like a Woman" blends slight hints of Memphis-inspired soul with lush countrypolitan strings that sound more redolent of Dusty Springfield than anything Shelby Lynne has ever recorded.

A Great Debut Album!

This girl deserves fame. Shes got the voice and the looks. Some of my favorites are "Country Girl," and "Anybody Out There."

Rissi has an absolutely amazing voice and is very talented!!! This is the first album i've ever bought on itunes, and I love every one of her songs. She deserves to be recognized for her talent that most of the artists in this industry seem to lack!!!!! Country Girl, butterflies, Sweet Contraditions, Mr. Ooh la La and I'm not of this world are my favorites! Buy this album and you won't be let down!!!

Soulfull Country

I love Rissi's soulful country voice and every song on this album. Some CD's, you just get tired of listening to, but not this one. Many people don't realize that country music is soul music! She brings it home! I hope more black musicians like Darius Rucker (Hootie) decide to come over to the original american soul music.

Years Active: '00s

Rissi Palmer broke into the country-pop scene in 2007 with the bright-eyed single "Country Girl." Palmer spent much of her adolescence in St. Louis, MO, where her participation in various talent competitions (including Hal Jackson's Talented Teens) paved the way for a publishing deal with Song Planet when she was 20. A Star Search rep stumbled across Palmer during one of her performances in New York, and the 21-year-old singer went on to compete on the 2003 season of the show. Coming in third in...
