Album Review

Mining much of the same cosmopolitan roots rock territory that the Wallflowers and Counting Crows have used to mixed results, the songs on Minibar's debut do have some arresting moments, but often suffer from a split personality disorder. The band members are Brits, the music they aspire to is American roots rock, and they never fully capture the pop sheen of the former or the ruggedness of the latter. The result is a set of good but not great songs with good but not great melodies, hooks, and lyrics — a sort of Wilco-lite. The opener, "Holiday From Myself," is a catchy number, but also contains a blandness that renders it a bit innocuous. The same goes for the title track and the cover of Ryan Adams' "Choked Up." The foundation is there, but Minibar needs to include some barbs with the hooks next time to make them stick.

Solid Outing

If you enjoy great songwriting, solid and catchy rythyms, great vocals and hearing a variety of British and American influences, this is a great CD to own and listen to over and over. You pick up something new every time you listen. The lyrics make you think and relate to something in yourself.

Phenomenal Album!

I had the privilege of seeing these guys twice in Los Angeles about 10 years ago or so visiting there from Louisiana... I was blown away! These guys are even better live!!! LOVE this album- arguably one of the best albums to come out of the '2000s' that was completely under the radar! 'Visible from Space' is one of my favorite songs...not just by Minibar but anyone! Great yourselves a favor and buy it!

While Minibar comes from the U.K., the quartet plays a brand of cosmopolitan roots rock (see Wallflowers and Counting Crows) that is distinctly American. Appropriately,...
