Album Review

The final release by Washington DC's giggle-pop quartet Blast Off Country Style, 1995's In My Arms is slightly less giddy than the group's earlier work, but it's not exactly serious, either. Evelyn Hurley's chirpy girl group-style vocals, now augmented by new member Allison Rigo's breathy harmonies, are as adorable as ever, but her lyrics are less flighty and silly (although "Bedtime Bandit" and "Rock It Man" are pretty goofy). The songs are on the speedy side of twee pop, a la Tiger Trap or Go Sailor, with a fizzy, manic quality that makes up for the sometimes simplistic melodies and skeletal production. In My Arms is hardly a record for the ages, but it's an adorable slice of rock and roll fun.
