Album Review

The strongest attribute of Silver Screen's debut lies in the album's simple beauty, with carefully crafted pop songs that owe so much influence to the shoegaze movement of the late '80s and early '90s — as can be instantly perceived on the album's gentle opener. From there it's a whirlwind of airy and softly crooned lyrics, jangly guitars that are free of distortion, and quiet but effective drumming that is the polar opposite of the shoegazers' elder statesmen. This is as much an album for hopeless romantics as any Death Cab for Cutie record, and Cris Miller deserves that much recognition and more for his attention to meticulous detail after detail; like Todd Rundgren, he plays every instrument, sings the songs, and produces the entire affair. His songwriting and production are polished and keenly focused, and hopefully this is a sign of great things to come in the near future.

Unique, Professional, and Solid

Silver Screen is probably one of the best of it's kind, if there is a category for this. It sounds very old but manages to capture the kind of polished and solid sound of today. It's definitely a solid buy for an indie album. It is very mellow and captivating in a vintage meets indie sorta way. Check out American Analog Set if you like Silver Screen. Also take a look at Lesley Lane, another band that sorta fits into this sort of genre. Overall I am very satisfied with this album.

Great Ode to the Old, Remixed

I was surprised to love this album as much as I do - most current shoegazing attempts have nothing so special going for them (they feel more like copied melodies than original works). These sounds, however, are quite dynamic and still very true to their influences. One can hear Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and the Cocteau Twins in every track, although, very much made new by the artist. Keep on keepin' on, story teller.

A Pleasant Surprise

I bought this liking the sound. After nearly a year this has crept into being one of my favorite albums. People alway ask about these songs when they hear them - they like the feel. I do, too. Do yourself a favor - take a chance - the 30 second samples here are indicative of the rest and the rest grows better with each listen. Great music!
