Luna Romantica

This is Luna's 6th full length studio album and not really their best effort. I give it 3 stars because I'm a Luna fan and can overlook some of the songs not having the usual polished dreampop sound they helped to pioneer back in the '90s. Certainly, "Lovedust", "Black Postcards", and "Black Champagne" capture what makes this, as Rolling Stone once put it, the best band you've never heard of. The rest of the album falls into the "aquired taste" category.

But -- and here is where I'm forgiving -- prior to this album, Luna's big ticket label (or bigger ticket, at least) dropped them. For bands, that's sort of like being fired. They shrugged it off and continued producing this album confident that someone, somewhere would come to their senses and sign them. Eventually, through twists and turns, they landed a deal with Jetset Records. Not exactly Electra, but, no matter. They got it distributed and went on tour. But the whole escapade clearly weighed on their ability to focus on great music as time in studio began eating at their cash reserves.

All in all, though, pretty impressive that they stuck to their guns, didn't buckle to pressure, produced a fine album, and pretty much while out in the cold, on their own.

Romantica

Luna's 2002 album, their 6th overall and first with Britta Phillips on bass, produced by Dave Fridmann and Gene Holder. Now with three bonus tracks.

Originally named Luna², the trio was a kind of alternative...
