EDITORS’ NOTES

Room 29, a collaboration between Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Chilly Gonzales, is a modern study of space and memory. Based on the rich history of Room 29 of Hollywood’s infamous Chateau Marmont, this song cycle combines pensive, dreamy piano, whispered narratives (“Room 29”), and quietly stark exchanges (“Tearjerker”).

One of the best of Jarvis Cocker's solo works:

I'm not familiar with Chilly Gonzalez, but i have been. Huge fan of Jarvis since Pulp and on. His wry and dark sense of humor is very present here as well as his deep poetic nature. The piano and orchestra alternate between haunting, dreamy and romantic fitting Jarvis Cocker's lyrics perfectly. If there was a dream team of two in b-ball, this would be the Michael Jordan and Chuck Taylor team of music.

If the first track is any indication

This is going to be excellent. Until it is released, I guess I'll have Tearjerker on repeat.

This is a joke, right?

Chilly Gonzalez, who is a decent composer (not great) is reusing his work paired with a mediocre singer/voice actor. The end result? Somewhere like William Shatner's poetry reading. What were they thinking, what was Deutsche Grammophone thinking?
