iTunes Review

The Philly duo’s 1975 self-titled album featured the commercial breakthrough “Sara Smile”—which prompted their previous label to rerelease “She’s Gone,” giving Hall & Oates two top 10 hits. For their follow-up album, 1976’s Bigger Than Both of Us, Daryl Hall wrote the new song they needed, “Rich Girl.” It became their first of six No. 1 hit singles and one of the most popular songs of the '70s and onward. John Oates handled lead vocals on “Back Together Again,” “Crazy Eyes," and “You’ll Never Learn,” giving the duo a sense of artistic balance. “Do What You Want, Be What You Are” would be covered by The Dramatics in 1979, but the Hall & Oates version shows how perfectly formed was the blue-eyed soul of these R&B fans from Philadelphia. With top session men like Leland Sklar and Scotty Edwards on bass and Jim Gordon and Ed Greene on drums, and with Tom Scott adding flute, saxophone, and lyricon where necessary, Hall & Oates were poised to have a big future. But they were still several albums away from mastering the formula for their greatest successes.

Make Room in Your Collection

The biggest question is why this CD was out of print? With a number one single (Rich Girl) and concert staples (Do What You Want, Room to Breathe) the songs are well know by most H2O fans. It's not perfect and would be topped later on by albums such as Voices, but this is a great example of the first section of Daryl and John's recording career. Must downloads - Room to Breathe, Do What You Want, Back Together Again, London Luck and Love.

Rock & Soul at its best

Platinum album by Hall & Oates includes Rich Girl, Back Together Again & Do What You Want, Be What You Are. Not sure if this is the new remastered version or not, but looking forward to hearing that. The last 3 tracks on the CD: Room To Breathe, You'll Never Learn, and Falling are probably among the best H&O non-hit tracks ever.

One of my favorite albums ever.....

6 Super Songs, must buy if you are a fan of early Hall and Oates. Still remember when I first heard Back Together Again on the radio as a 12 year old who listened to a lot of R & B at the time. I thought it was the coolest song I ever heard.

From their first hit in 1974 through their heyday in the '80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates' smooth, catchy take on Philly soul brought them enormous commercial success -- including six number one singles and six platinum albums. Hall & Oates' music was remarkably well constructed and produced; at their best, their songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them, incorporating elements of new wave and hard rock. Daryl Hall began performing...
