While Lynn Anderson's star never shined as brightly as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette's, she nonetheless produced a long string of country hits between the mid-'60s and early '70s. Early hits like "No Another Time" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" have a more produced sound than Lynn's music from the same time period. The lyrics of songs like "Promises, Promises" and "Flattery Will Get You Everywhere" also reflect the same ambiguity of a woman's place in the modern world expressed by Wynette. What most people, even non-country music fans, will remember most vividly, is Anderson's 1970 version of "Rose Garden," a Joe South song that reached number three on the pop charts. "Top of the World," from 1973, will be equally familiar. One nice thing about 16 Biggest Hits, though, is that it gives a fuller portrait of Anderson's career beyond these obvious hits. It's also noteworthy that a number of her songs crossed over in the early '70s, though none charted as high as "Rose Garden." 16 Biggest Hits is an enjoyable one-disc collection that will please both country music and Anderson fans. ~ Ronnie D. Childhood Memories Come Flooding Back...
...and it wasn't a rose garden either. I remember getting up in front of my 3rd grade class and singing Promises, Promises. My class would applaud and my 3rd grade teacher would grimace. Lynn Anderson was one of Nashville's forgotten gems after the '70's, but to listen to her today, her voice is still pretty impressive on such tunes as Just Like Jesse James (a Cher cover). This album shows her range and depth as a real Nashville contender. She should have remained a lot more popular for her contributions.
Lynn Anderson is often overlooked. Yet her voice and songs are reflective of Nashville and it's women in the late 60's through the 70's. Anyone knowledgeable about classic country will love and recognize both her big cross over hit (Rose Garden, my least favorite song of hers) as well as How Can I Unlove You, Stay There Till I Get There, What A Man my Man Is as well as the cover of that awesome song Cry.
True story. I was in Toas New Mexico at The Sagebrush Inn. Its new years 2002. Some older blonde lady is telling the bartender to turn on NBC because Her friend is going to play live. Curious, I ask..."Whos Your friend"? She says..."Uncle Cracker". Im not a big Uncle cracker guy, but non the less...."How do You know Uncle Cracker"?...She says.."Hes a big fan of old country music". Uh.....OK. "I opened for Him about a year ago". A light bulb goes off in my Dads head. He pulls me too the side and explains who it is. I have heard "Rose Garden" at the time. I am alomst 40. I sit back down next to Lynn Anderson and we did shots till 2 in the morning. What a cool lady. I will never forget that night.
