Reseña de álbum

This is a typically tasteful Kenny Burrell record (reissued on CD) with the guitarist mostly emphasizing ballads. Five of the seven songs (which include "Make Someone Happy," "Since I Fell for You" and the theme from "A Streetcar Named Desire") find Burrell assisted by pianist Richard Wyands (who also played electric piano), bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Lenny McBrowne. "'Round Midnight" is played by Burrell with pianist Joe Sample, bassist Johnson and drummer Paul Humphrey while "Blues in the Night" is an unaccompanied guitar solo. Although the music overall is well-played, no real sparks fly and the results often border on being sleepy.

Overlooked Gem

If you are a fan of the jazz guitar, or just this simple, organic sound you can't go wrong buying this album. The above review says no sparks fly. I feel sympathy for the reviewer, as I do for all the hearing is too wonderful a gift to live a life without it. "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" is something special. Feel good about owning this album. Owners of it are finer examples of humanity than those without it.

The best of blues and jazz

The solo guitar piece, "Blues in the Night," played in E, is a masterpiece of melding delta-style blues guitar with jazz. The title track, Round Midnight, features a superb solo, where simplicity yields excitement. As always, Burrell, brings out the deep blues embedded in modern jazz.

A really nice Kenny Burrell album

I'm a jazz guitarist and avid collector of jazz guitar albums. Most of Kenny's albums are very nice. A lot are on the bluesy side of the jazz fence. He's always a very tasteful player, gets a great tone, and always seems to maintain a deep connection to the blues. I remember one guitarist describing Kenny as spinning jazz lines that phrase like speech patterns. I believe that's true, and adds to the great warmth and humanity that his playing projects. I like this album, in particular because it has a very sultry, "after hours" kinda vibe going for it that really seems to complement Kenny. If you are interested in buying one Kenny Burrell album, this is my favorite.

One of the leading exponents of straight-ahead jazz guitar, Kenny Burrell is a highly influential artist whose understated and melodic style, grounded in bebop and blues, made him in an in-demand sideman from the mid-'50s onward and a standard by which many jazz guitarists gauge themselves to this day. Born in Detroit in 1931, Burrell grew up in a musical family in which his mother played piano and sang in the Second Baptist Church choir and his father favored the banjo and ukulele. Burrell began...
